The day I bought my XR400, I couldn't get it to start. The dealer had to come over and start if for me. Cold: Turn on the gas. Turn up the idle 1 turn. Full choke. Slowly push down the kick starter until you feel resistance. Let the kickstarter return to the top. Give a good long kick to the bottom. Not a short stab.

XR400 hard starting / no starting
I've had my xr400 suddenly present with low to seemingly no compression a few times over the years, always after traveling to the mountains, high elevation and having the bike set out in the freezing temps overnight. I figure it was from sticking rings, valve or auto decomp mechanism. Always corrected itself after being warmed up.

Buying an XR400: 1998 & older VS 1999 & newer
I guess a 2000 or newer XR400 is probably the best model in the years it was produced but the changes seem rather minor. The thing of it is in my area I can pick up a nice 1998 or older XR400 for $1200 to $1500 while a 1999 or newer XR400 seems to sell for around $2500 to $3000.

xr250 vs xr400
for me on tight stuff the 2nd and 3rd gear on the 250 is far more usable than the 2nd and 3rd on the 400 in tight conditions. the 250 i can really make scream in 3rd on the single track which puts the bike at a higher rpm making it more responsive. where as on my 400 at the same speed i have to lug it low rpm's in 3rd thus taking away and power …

As for the XR400 flywheel, I got it mainly to look at the size difference and position of the pickup tab compared to the 650R. I also wanted to see how similar it is in general to the XR650Rs flywheel. I would be curious to compare notes with a 98-2004 year model XR400 as well, if someone wants to pull one & compare notes just the same.

As a newbie owner of an xr400 its great to have all your combined experience available. Just bought a 2000 xr400 that was desert ridden out of the Los Angeles area at 49ft elevation.
