Olivine often contains nickel, cobalt and iron. These elements will also react with the acidic leachate. Nickel and cobalt extraction from olivine is beneficial to the production of nickel and cobalt as hydroxide. Iron may extract as ferrous iron from olivine and with the addition of sodium hypochlorite may be oxidized to precipitate.
Tailing samples were collected from 6 different sectors. A composite of approximately 5 kg and up to 2 m depth, were taken from each section (Fig. 1), including six samples of recently piled tailings and 14 samples of different ages. The description and coordinates of the sampling points for both WRD and tailings are displayed in Appendix 1.

Tailings containing high abundances of olivine, serpentine and diopside show the highest CDR potential due to their favourable kinetics. We conclude that the most suitable tailings for CDR purposes are those associated with olivine dunites, diamond kimberlites, asbestos and talc serpentinites, Ni sulphides, and PGM layered mafic intrusions.
