The idea was to find 1 gram of flakes, I didn't get there but I did learn a bit and also tried a home made sluice to speed things up a bit. A few google searches and a little time watching videos led me to the Bazooka Gold Trap sluice concept. Basically the sluice has no riffles, but uses a lower section (trap) to hold on to the heavies.

I for one swear by fluid beds as a main trap. And a firm beleiver of large catchment flares, for slow flowing creeks, and generally needing to damn up less. And a simple V mat on the flare is a great optical indicator. A self classifying sluice, that has a fluid bed and dream mat as a back up is more than possible.
Then build a combination sluice/fluid bed trap to end the lost gold blues! No Riffles, No need to classify, No lost gold. My version does not load up with rocks that have to constantly be cleared off the grizzly as on the commercial models.
