a kiln shelf is too thin to safely be used as a peep hole plug. you can make one as a hollow clay taper that will work nicely. be sure to make it long enough for you to get a safe grip on the larger end.

Those cracks are probably nothing to worry about. Hairline cracks are perfectly normal in the floor slab, especially in 28" kilns. Since the L&L kiln stand has a solid top that supports the floor very well, even if the cracks open up a bit it's not going to matter.

It will be much less of a headache than; using the shrinkage rate of your clay to calculate how much bigger you have to make the connection, between the ceramic and metal, figuring out how to fire them, both in the bisque and glaze, hope there is no issue with the metal slumping in the heat and/ or leaving a residue on your ceramic, etc.
The flloor and lid are usually the same-every brand may differ slightly. Size and thickness are important. Check with your brand of kiln manufacture .If they are long gone make sure teh size is the same.
Check out any ceramic supply stores, the one near me sell used wheels, kilns, slab rollers and kilns. This is also a good time of the year to check out estate sales. I bought one that was a mess that came with 100's of stilts fresh in boxes and some newer kiln shelves.
